“The man known as U-Nam, is destined to become one of the most
controversial musicians. In the few recordings that I have heard, there is a
conviction towards making himself felt by the general public, and the critics
alike. It’s great to have a new voice on the guitar scene; one that is loaded with
energy and excitement.”
-Ten time Grammy Award recipient, NAE Jazz Master and Guitar legend-
-George Benson-
With an approach that is both innovative and daring, not to mention a clutch of top 30 Billboard hits to his name, writer, producer and guitarist extraordinaire “U-Nam” continues to shake the world of Smooth Jazz to its core.
Indeed since moving to the USA from Paris, France in 2008, his reputation has skyrocketed. As the founder and owner of the niche label Skytown Records, he has reshaped the genre in a way that continues to makes him stand out from the crowd.
Starting out as a sought after session player he rapidly established himself as a producer and re-mixer where his work with the likes of Barry White and Kool & the Gang earned him several Gold and Multi-Platinum records.
In 2005 his solo recording career burst into life with the critically acclaimed “The Past Builds the Future” yet it was following his relocation to LA that he made his first significant breakthrough with his sophomore album “Back From the 80’s”.
It included the #1 hit “Street Life” which stayed in the top three on the US Billboard Charts for three months and in the top ten charts for an entire year.
Opportunities to tour as a solo artist rapidly followed and his performances captivated audiences from Moscow to Manhattan and Tokyo to LA. Along the way he played festivals, clubs and cruises, shared the stage with a host of Smooth Jazz A-Listers and continued to enhance his credentials as an artist with an approach that is entirely fearless.
“Unamimity” (which boasted the US Billboard Top 30 charting “Shine On”) followed in 2009 and by the time the sensational “C’est Le Funk” hit the streets in 2014 his standing as a purveyor of high-octane guitar driven smooth jazz was well and truly established.
A real landmark moment in U-Nam’s illustrious career came when he undertook the ambitious project of creating a tribute to the great George Benson. Titled “Weekend In LA – A Tribute To George Benson” the album reached #1 on iTunes Japan for Jazz, #1 on Amazon US for Neo-Soul, #1 on Amazon US for Smooth Jazz and also received Grammy consideration with 10 entries over 6 categories.
On to 2018 and it was “The Essential Collection” that left his legion of fans savoring the memories whilst looking forward to the next exciting chapter. When that chapter arrived it was in unusual circumstances. From the debris of a complicated divorce, which occurred in the fall of 2018, U-Nam turned to the creative process to purge the emotions and relieve the tensions that for a while hung heavily upon him. The result was “Future Love” and the outcome was nothing short of cathartic.
It was U-Nam making a bold statement as to what might come next and as it turned out there was lots of it.
Indeed, twenty plus years on and as a recording artist and live performer U-Nam’s creative genius show no signs of diminishing. His stand out 2023 venture “Sunshine of Mine” which features the hit single “Juicy Smile” has only served to strengthen his already vice-like grip on all that is good in Smooth Jazz.
Another track that has also set the airwaves alight is the shimmering “Make a Wish” which is reminiscent of the stellar work he was doing back in the nineties with some of the biggest R&B acts around, but now with the addition of silky strings that bestow a veneer both sophisticated and soulful.
The fact it followed hot on the heels of his Funk fuelled success “California Funk Machine” (that first emerged in 2021 with volume two arriving less than a year later) is yet another glowing endorsement of his undisputed musical superpowers.
In short U-Nam is the ultimate exponent of exuberant R&B tinged Smooth Jazz that, over and over, U-Nam is able to effortlessly deliver.
